6 weeks

Brynn turned 6 weeks old yesterday. I had my 6 week post partum check-up yesterday as well. It didn't go too well - I almost started crying. I am losing my insurance as of tomorrow since I only paid for COBRA through March. And so I assumed I would/could get my pap smear at my 6 week appointment since I hadn't had one since July of 2010. At every appointment during my firs trimester I kept refusing a pap smear because of my fear of bleeding. Around week 25 I told my doctor I wouldn't mind getting one at one of my next appointments because I was no longer worried about an adverse reaction. She just said we'd make sure I'd get one before my insurance ran out.

So yesterday as the nurse lady is doing all the preliminary stuff she says, "Oh you are due for you pap in July," and I said - actually it's been almost 2 years since my last one in July of 2010 so I'd like to get it now. And she said I'd have to make another appointment for my annual because the doctor doesn't do pap smears at the 6 week follow-up. I told her that the doctor said she'd make sure I got it done before my insurance ran out and that I wouldn't be able to come back for another appointment. She seemed really uptight to me and said, "Well you will just have to ask the doctor about it when you see her because she doesn't do them at the 6 week follow-up." She put me in a room and I continued to sit there for the next 40 minutes trying not to cry and getting more and more upset waiting for the doctor to come in. All I could think was - Ok, the doctor asked me at EVERY appointment for my first 3 months if I was ready to get my pap smear done yet (she seemed to always think that me wanting to skip it wasn't very logical anyhow), and now for some reason she can't do it at my last appointment?!?! I don't understand the logic in that. Obviously, I understand that's it's not part of the pregnancy, but why can't they do 2 things at once and just bill it as both my annual and my 6 week? They are basically checking the same things at both! I had Brynn with me too, and I was terrified she was going to wake up because she was grunting and turning a bunch, but luckily she stayed asleep.

I heard the nurse telling the doctor that I was insisting on a pap smear (she was practically whispering - I guess so I wouldn't overhear?) because my insurance was running out, it just made me feel even worse right before she came in. Anyway when Dr. U came in the first thing she said was she'd do the pap smear for me even though she doesn't usually do them at the 6 week check up. She didn't seem mad or annoyed or anything though, she acted like it was no big deal - so I don't understand why some people like to make others feel horrible for things. I told the doctor I was really sorry and that I didn't know they didn't do them - otherwise I would have made a separate appointment for that same week. She said it was no problem. It still doesn't make sense to me WHY they won't do a pap smear at the 6 week, it just seems silly to make me have 2 appointments when essentially the only thing they are doing differently is taking a sample? But whatever.

The appointment itself wasn't bad other than that. I gave Dr. U an announcement of Brynn and a picture of her with both Theo and Brynn (because I'd never given her the one of Theo) when they were born. I just used Photoshop to put the two pictures together (I'll post it below). It was actually pretty funny because the doctor didn't realize it was 2 different babies and she was like, "Wait did you take a picture and then I cleaned the baby and you took another picture? How come he looks cleaner in one picture?!" She thought they were the same baby but didn't understand why Theo looked so much cleaner than Brynn lol! After I clarified they were different babies she laughed and showed her assistant the picture. She said she really liked the idea of putting the pictures together and would tell her other patients to do it too. And she said obviously the first one was a boy, but couldn't tell what the second one was - but she knew I'd had a girl which confused her even more. And then she said the good thing about wearing masks was that you couldn't tell that she has aged. Haha, that's true. She looks almost identical in both pictures.

Then she said she'd see me in a year - or when I have insurance haha. Actually, I doubt I'll ever go back there. Hopefully we'll move before I decide I need another pap smear and most definitely before we ever possibly have another baby. It makes me a little sad, honestly, but I am happy too, to be done with this for now.
