On Sunday night I was a witness to a pretty bad accident. A car was passing me on the right (the right lane was about to end). I was going about 45 mph, so she must have been going closer to 60 mph. She was a little ways ahead of me when I realized she had hit something - at first I thought it was boxes, then I realized it was a man. It took the driver what seemed a long time before she started to stop. I saw the mans arms and legs flailing, and stuff he had been carrying going all over the road. I started to slow down and then stopped, and the man's body went over the hood of the car and fell about 10 ft in front of my car (the lady finally stopped).
I was completely in shock. I looked at the man - he had a leg completely torn off (I think it must have gotten caught under the car?), and one leg was broken with the bone completely out of the skin, and his head was turned funny and his arms were under his body in awkward positions. He wasn't moving at all, I was sure he was dead. I didn't know what to do. The lady wasn't getting out of the car and I didn't have my cellphone. A truck stopped a ways back from us and I saw him get on his cell phone. There were also lots of people on the side of the road - I think they may have been walking with the man? I thought about getting out of the car to see if the lady was alright, but I knew the man in front of my wasn't alright and I just didn't know if getting out was the right thing to do.
I also didn't know if I should drive away or not - but I was scared I'd run over him or his leg which was in the middle of the street, so I just stayed. Two firetrucks, two police cars and an ambulance came probably 6-8 minutes later. They tried to revive the man, it didn't work, and then they put a tarp over him. They then got the lady out of the car and put on a stretcher and in the ambulance.
A police officer came to talk to me and asked me what had happened, I told him the whole story and how it had happened right in front of me.
I felt quite sick that whole night. I'm feeling better now, just quite sad. The image of his body all messed up will probably stay with me for a long time. I'm sad for the man who lost his life and I'm sad for his family, and I'm sad for the woman who hit him, who I'm sure will have to deal with this for the rest of her life. Here is a link to the original story (I was the car she was passing).
