Night 2

Ok, so Theo's 1st night went alright. He was in bed at 8, Hayden went to bed at 8:30, and all was well. But then Theo woke up shortly before 10. Brandon went in there and rocked him a little and then left him to cry it out for another few minutes. This woke Hayden up, so Hayden was in there saying, "Go to sleep Theo!". It was pretty cute. But we figure that Hayden, too, is going to have a rough couple weeks until Theo gets the hang of this sleeping by himself thing. After this Theo woke up again shortly after midnight and I was so incredibly tired that I did the easy thing - I brought him to bed with me.

Well, it was a start anyway.

So last night, night 2. I didn't put him to bed until 9:15. I nursed him, rocked him, and laid him in the crib. He cried when I left the room - but only for like a minute! And then he promptly stopped and fell right asleep! It was very easy! Hayden went to bed a little before 10 (yes very late I know). Theo woke at about 10:45. I went in, rocked him and put him back down. This time when I left he cried for a few minutes. But I never had to go back in - he fell asleep. Then he woke up at about 1:00 (I think) and this time I was too tired to have any resolve - I brought him to bed with me.

Maybe it doesn't sound like we are making progress, but we are. I remember going through this with Hayden. He slowly would sleep longer and longer periods and eventually (I think he was 16 months?) we woke up one morning and realized Hayden was not in bed with us! He had slept the whole night! I think the most important thing right now is that we are getting him to go to sleep by himself and he is recognizing that.

It is also hard when I have to get up at 6 am for work and I really just want to sleep at night - not get up every 2 hours to go put him back to sleep. So, I think that on weekend nights I will definitely try to keep my resolve and not bring him to bed with me, but during the week, if I'm really tired then I may just bring him to bed when he wakes up. It seemed to work with Hayden, and at least I get the first few hours of the night with no baby in the bed!

We are going to my parents house for the weekend, so I'm pretty sure that is going to set us back with this sleeping thing. Oh well.
